Saunders Brothers is a 275 acre wholesale nursery and orchard in Piney River, Virginia. They grow and ship tractor trailer loads of potted plants to nurseries up and down the mid-Atlantic area.
Frank maintains about 45 John Deere tractors and other assorted field equipment. Eight to ten of these tractors run 1800-2100 rpms 10 hrs a day from March thru December. John Deere’s recommended oil change (with John Deere oil) is 200 hours. Frank, after switching to Schaeffer #700 Supreme 7000 15W-40 Oil (using an outside used oil testing facility) has increased the oil change intervals to 550-1,000 hrs. Frank commented “the analysis came back with the oil still good and we just kept on going up. We are changing the tractors 1time a year saving 1-2 oil changes”.
This extended oil change interval has saved Saunders Brothers’ about $12,000 a year.
Frank also has John Deere sprayers. He was replacing the pillow bearings in those sprayers every year at a cost of $600.00/ bearing. Since switching to Schaeffer #238 grease 10 years ago. he has replace two bearings.
